Kotaku.com

There are very little colours on the website; the colour scheme of the website seems to be purple and yellow. The overall design of the website is very simple. With very little additional content, such as ads, with only a few throughout the entire site.

The font the website uses has a serif, however this is only for the main body of texts, the rest are bold and clear fonts for titles and such. This is assumed to be easily and quickly read. This is a good choice for the target audience which obviously are, gamers because it provides a clear and easy to read text. Likewise in a video game, people appreciate clear and easy to read text, so it would be a somewhat good choice for not just gamers, but everybody.
At the top of the main site is a featured story which has a banner of its own with an image. This is the article that they will believe to be most desirable to read or most popular so, it gets a place at the very top of the page where you can't ignore it when you load the homepage.
Under this there is a feed of stories.

The website has social media features, such as Facebook likes and Google +1's, this includes a share function. The website also uses hash tags, much like Twitter. These will appeal to many people who are frequently on the web because they are so easy to spot and distinguish between because of how popular the other sites are. This also creates a level of familiarity with the reader if they do use Facebook, Google plus or Twitter.

The website does not take up the entire screen, the width is fixed as it is, leaving white space on either side of the content, this matches the simplistic theme that the site portraits. The website is most likely like this so that it can fit a large number of monitors, rather than just cater to users with either large ones or small ones. The webpage is locked at that ratio, which provides an in between viewable page for a large number of users. Excluding those with tiny screens or those who could be accessing the site via a mobile device such as a phone.

Because of the layout i think that the site is aimed at young adults, the site also loads quickly, this is because there isn't much content to load. Although it is aimed specifically at gamers, who generally have higher connection speeds, but it does make the site more accessible for the general public who may have lesser connections.

Copyright

1. What is copyright?
Copyrighting something is claiming the creation/object as yours. This means that legally no one can edit or repost  the copyrighted material.

2. What are the three 'moral rights' ?

The right of attribution - the creator of work has the right to be identified as such
Creators of things can be seen as the creators.
The right of integrity - the work may not be altered or changed without consent
People cannot alter original work without the creators' consent
False attribution - a work cannot be attributed to a creator falsely
You cannot claim somebody made something wen they did not.

3.How might copyright affect you and your work?

Because we keep blogs and use images, which could then be claimed as copyright, thus we should use copyright free material. However there is a new copyright option called CreativeCommons which was designed to allow people to use others work without having to contact lawyers and go through legal puzzles.

SOPA and PIPA are American bills to prevent online piracy, ACTA is an international bill to also prevent such things. However ACTA does more things, if it passes it ISPs (Internet service providers) will be held responsible for what its users do. Thus turning them into private copyright police. This would also limit and cut down on the number of accessible sites and such items from certain countries. Although they are American bills, because most of the large, popular and well known sites are hosted and created in America, it will greatly affect the rest of the world.

Although ACTA has existed for 2 years now, it has only just come into the public's eyes and causing worry.

Some people support these bills because, these people might be musicians who are worried about piracy.
Although there are those that support it, many of the users of the internet believe the bills should not be passed as it would have too much of an affect on every day use of the net.

Although the bills are made to prevent copyright infringement, creators, artists and publishers can post items under the Creative Commons section. Which can allow free use of that piece. For example, you can allow free for non commercial or free use as long as the person using it then posts it under free use themselves. Websites such as DeviantArt (http://www.deviantart.com/) support this and offer this an option when you upload a submission. YouTube has also begun advertising the Creative Commons options for videos.

In an example of Creative Commons, a band might upload a piece of music, then allow others to use it, so long as it is non commercial. People do this, a well known band for this is Approaching Nirvana, who release songs which are free to use and more importantly copyright free.

In different countries and regions there are different  copyright trade groups which represent different media's work. For example the RIAA is responsible for the recording industry in the USA, and the MPAA is responsible for the film industry in the USA. Because there are so many different companies that are reliable for copyright of material, Creative Commons was needed to avoid having to contact so many people just to use a piece of media when the creator intended it to be free use. Creative Commons removes the needs for contacting so many people in short, and makes it publicly visible that you can or cannot use a certain piece of media.

2012 Trends

What are the strongest emerging markets for interactive technologies?

Cloud applications are beginning to emerge and increase in popularity. Apple has released their own cloud application with the launch of iOS5, which allows users to transfer files between different devices, as long as their connected. Cloud has also emerged into the gaming industry, initially allowing users to store saves. There are now applications that allow users to stream the game/program directly to their computer. This means that hard drive space will be spaced thus larger hard drives won’t be needed.
http://www.onlive.co.uk/
Online is the main contender in the cloud gaming area. Which are most commonly seen on Youtube adverts on ‘Gaming’ videos. This is an example of target advertising.
http://kotaku.com/onlive/
Kotaku reviewed onlive, showing that capabilities of it. The article shows the onlive idea in a good light. Whereas reactions to the adverts on Youtube are fairly negative.

Cloud applications appear to be the new thing for 2012 and we should see an increase in programs and applications using cloud. This in theory will advance with the increase in wifi connections in areas.

How are mobile OS platforms expected to change?

Mobile device developers are beginning to move towards using HTML5, rather than using Flash because of the stability across devices. When iOS5 was launched Apple chose not to support Flash. Eventually devices will switch over to HTML5.
With the launch of the Windows phone, there will be an increase in the sale of that, it is also one of the main contenders in mobile OS area, the others being Android and iOS.
Apple's iOS mainly increases in sales when there are holidays and or sales which decreases the price. Whereas Android has a more stable rate of sales

How is interactivity changing the way producers and consumers relate to each other?

With the increase in online connectivity. Consumers can communicate with developers, and vice versa. As a result of this products can have a more community based outcome, for example, Treyarch took a lot of feedback and ideas from the Call Of Duty community. This in-turn promoted them and improved their relationship with the community. More and more games are now being influenced by the community. A large part of this is done via Twitter and Facebook, two of the largest and most popular social networking websites.

How are mobile technologies changing the face of the market?

More and more mobile devices are becoming touch screens, this is because it is the quickest method of interface. It is more impressive to users/customers, because of the high number of devices using touch screen technology it is quickly becoming the norm. to have a touch screen device, most mobile phones are touch screens now.

After now owning an Android device (Samsung Galaxy S II, to be exact) for awhile now, I can safely see why there is a huge market in such devices. Before my recent phone upgrade I had the same phone for about 2 years. The change in technology was amazing. The advancements made in mobile technology has become great, clearer and nicer screens. Faster and better processors. All that nice stuff! The reason there is a huge market for these devices is mainly because of the price or functionality.

To confirm what I mentioned earlier. Touch screens are defiantly without a doubt popular, they are not becoming popular anymore, they are the norm. Even my mother has a touch screen phone and a Kindle. I've even caught my father looking at my old phone (Touch screen also) and he is over 50 and doesn't know how to use a PC very well, to put things into perspective.

Social networking in 2012

In 2012 it is predicted that Google plus will increase in users and become more popular, because it is Google, they will have more influence. Google plus is Google's take on social networking, a major feature of Google plus being the personalized search results, for example if you searched for food, results that your friends liked would appear. Consider the size of Google and how many users it has, this feature would be massive, and would definitely have an impact on the way people would use Google.

With that said, YouTube is also changing, updating its channel layout for users and a few tweaks. Last year YouTube experimented with HTML5 and the live stream/show ability for partnered users/channels. The general opinion of an avid internet surfer; It seems like its adding new features, as any site does and simply updating it a bit.

Although even a simply layout update can cause a reaction from a community. For example every time YouTube has a layout update there is always a mob of angry keyboard warriors upset and confused by the change.

Facebook seems to be staying the same, or well... not making any huge changes, none that I have noticed anyway. The timeline feature was released, people also gathered torches and pitch forks at the sight of a new layout.

I can't comment on Twitter or Tumblr, although I have an account on both, and I do check them, I don't care enough about the sites to follow their progress. Twitter I simply use to read funny facts or to read, if I'm that bored. Tumblr, simply to look at pictures for a quick laugh.

Interactive Games

Left 4 Dead
While lacking interactivity the acting was decent and amusing. Its easy to see that the focus wa so nthe acting. The video features several big names from the gaming community was produced and posted by The Game Station, a well known channel based around gaming videos.

Husky - http://www.youtube.com/huskystarcraft
Dodger - http://www.youtube.com/presshearttocontinue
Davis - http://www.youtube.com/thewarpzone
Schroeder - http://www.youtube.com/thewarpzone
Total Biscuit - http://www.youtube.com/totalhalibut

Terminator
One of the games that came up when searching "interactive game" on youtube. Initially the intro is very long and not the most thrilling thing to watch, I found myself skepping through the video.
The main cast of the entire video appears to be children, which isn't a bad thing, although the acting isn't the best. The game has many paths and ways to go when you begin, this is good and provides alot of interactivity, however this can be overwhelming and confusing at times.
I didn't find the game gripping or interesting at all and didn't finish the game.

Over all, the interactivy was great but overwhelming at times.

Completion!

Finally, my first website is finished, well, it was a few days ago but updating my blog slipped my mind.
I've already posted the reflective analysis, (me stating the obvious as to what is wrong with my design) so I'm unsure what to put now. Besides, "Its finished!".

Reflective Analysis

After finishing my website to a level that I am happy with, I can now see the end result and which parts of my design were good and which parts weren't as good. For example I believe my main downfall was the overall presentation of the website. However I do believe I have stuck to my "Simplistic" mindset and approach to it. Despite the navigation bar being functional, the actual colour scheme of the site has much to be desired.

1: Navigation
As you can see from above, the navigation bar is black, with a fade to the site background which is a desert picture, which I have adjusted the brightness and contrast of to make darker. Initially, this was to provide a dark, easy on the eyes design which would be nicer to look at for periods of time, and to work on. However, because the picture has been changed to lower the brightness, the colours suffer and look strange and un-natural. The black navigation bar also looks out of place in contrast to the picture, rather than using a completely black background for it, a better idea would have been to use a slightly transparent or matching colour to compliment the background.
The font I have used to create the buttons are also not the most ideal ones, because they can be at times, hard to read and for a new user, it may be difficult for them to be able to distinguish what the button says/is for.
Despite the flaws with the main colour scheme, it is kept consistent  throughout the site, which I believe to be a better design than having an alternating design on every page. I believe, because the film is based in Persia, a middle Eastern country, which is known for its deserts and harsh conditions., I made the correct choice using a desert picture as the background for the site. However, there are different themes that the site could have followed, rather than a desert, the site could be based around a set of ruins, or market for example.

2: Pre loader
The pre loader prior to the actual site is an FLV of one of the main parts of the film, changing its contrast and saturation randomly, to create a glowing affect. It is also followed by a white loading bar at the bottom of the screen. While the loading bar is not complex it is a simple and most users would quickly establish that it is showing the status of the load.
I think that the glowing dagger is a nice, simple an good looking addition to the pre loader as it catches the eye of the user, just before the site appears. However, rather than creating this in After Effects and rendering it as a FLV, I'm sure there is a more efficient, and easier way to create this affect gain but with a smaller file size.

3&4: Merch.

Rather than adding in an entire store for the site, I have provided links to external sources to purchase Prince of Persia Merchandise. Although using primarily images to label and show the merchandise, it is easier and can be simpler than having a lot of text and prices on the site. However, the site does look empty and without much detail with this. This can still be a better choice than having a full page of available listings, which in my opinion looks messy, cluttered and at times, confusing.
Because the official Prince of Persia website also promotes more products I have also included another, more discreet form of advertising in the shape of a Lego man. I chose to use this over a static button linking to the products because this is a more creative, nicer and a less formal way to advertise products.

Initial Reactions?
Zac: I liked the Enter Site button... But when I clicked it took me to a fairly empty homepage. That has to change, maybe put in an interactive feature such as the dagger of time 360 degree view? Or a profile of the characters.
Roxanne: I think it's really good

Does the site fit the film’s theme?
Zac: Yes. But the homepage could have some more information about the film.
Roxanne: Yes, I think the site fits the theme nicely.

Navigation difficulties?
Zac: None. I found the website to have a nice layout and all the links work.
Roxanne: No navigation difficulties at all but maybe change the font of HOME Because I thought it said Some but maybe that's just me, because I'm foreign.

From the replies I have received from various users, I can see that one major issue is the homepage. To hopefully solve this issue I am going to add more things to the homepage.
Also from the replies  I have gotten, I can see that I may have gone for a too simple design, which to others, may just seem like an empty or unfinished site. Which is definitely not what is wanted in a site design. I can see that in the future I should try to work on designs that would appeal to the mass of people, rather than using and going with designs that I feel are better.

The animation that the Icons do when the mouse hovers over them, on the downloads page, while it is a nice looking affect, if the user moves the mouse off of the icon sharply then the animation automatically stops and returns to its original form. While this is a good thing, it does not look smooth or clean. There are other ways to create this affect and end with a smoother roll off action. In regards to creating the affect, there are also easier ways to do so, without having to create several symbols. Inside one another.

There are also no transitions between pages, which can be seen as a bad thing, however, for site browsing, it makes navigation easier. For instance, if you wanted to change pages quickly, a transition would simply take up time, thus not having any saves time for the user. However having no transitions might look bad when analysing the site critically. Despite this, I chose not to include transitions, although they would have made navigation of the site smoother and nicer.

Overall, I am happy with the outcome of this website, which is also the first website I have made independently. My expectations were not high before, however, I  feel my site design has done better that I originally hoped for. Although, that point of view if bias towards myself. I stand by it and I hope to make things in the future of higher quality.

Progression

The film 'site project is due soon.

That said, I've done I think, nearly all of the pre production work already. This assessment is based on the preproduction more so than the actual website.

Soon I'll check over what I have and make corrections, updates and improvements. As far as the site progress goes, its near completion, I just need to add details to the pages and such!

Sadly, I think its too late to create a nicer navigation system, I could change them, but I won't, in fear of ruining it. My current mindset; Finish this project, make the next better!

I made this following a tutorial over the holidays.
Here it is!
^ Theres the link for the tutorial, the site has many other tutorials I'll eventually look through and possibly try.
