Although this method is slower than IM, it can be easier for transferring and sending files.

Creating an account with this service gives you an alternative number, which imitates a mobile number. For other users, it still costs standard rates to reply.

Even in some extreme scenarios, where communication/media has been disband, which has happened before in the past, and people using mobile devices, used Twitter to contact the outside world.
Forums are a public open space for users to create, view and post in threads. Threads are also referred to as Topics. Some forums now include a chat room, as well as the ability to send personal messages to other users.

Omegle is a site that allows you to connect to a random stranger at will and talk to them, by either text chat or video chat. Recently it has been updated to connect you with people who have the same “liked” pages on Facebook. You can also use the app version on a mobile device.
MMO’s are online games that are completed based around the multiplayer area. They are mostly online Role Playing Games, for example, World of Warcraft, Rift, Runescape. They are all MMORPG’s, which are based around paying a monthly subscription to play online. Many of these games promote “guilds” which are a group of people, a clan that would play together, and would offer Guild support, this can be an attractive reason to play.
Facetime is a video calling system used on iPhones iPods and macs. It connects over wifi and a call can last as long as you want. Another plus is that it’s completely free. As long as you have the software.
iMessage is a free messaging system that operates over wi fi on ipods, iphones and ipads. You have to be connected to wifi to use it. This is basically a simple way of sending texts. The only problem is that the other person has to have IMessage otherwise it would be pointless.
BBM Blackberry messenger is a messaging service that you have to pay for only on blackberry. It send messages to other blackberry devices just like a text would. This is slightly similar to Apple’s IMessage. Except for the fact that it’s not free.
Steam is a game managing client used to manage PC games, friends and events. it acts as the PC's equivalent or xbox's live, or the Playstation Network. Steam allows users to talk to friends, add friends, manage games, files, and allows the purchase of games through it via download. Many games now steam activated, meaning an internet connection is required as well as a steam account.
Skype is an instant messaging program which, originally started on PC and has now made its way over to hand held devices, such as phones.
Skype is based around text, voice and video chatting. However it is most known for video and voice chat because of the group call ability, allowing users to have multiple people in one call, however. Users need a premium account to do a video call with more than 1 other person.
Skype is also capable of making calls and sending SMS messages to phones and land lines, this requires credit. Which can be bought with a pay as you go system or as a tariff.
Msn is another instant messaging program, which is similar to Skype, however it is completely free. Whereas it offers the same options as Skype, it is also more restricted, when using voice and video chat. Although, msn uses the user's email ,rather than them having to make an account.
When you sign up to YouTube you automatically get an Inbox which mean other YouTubers are able to Email you and send videos. This also shows you the new comments on you videos. Another thing you can do with YouTube is upload videos and have them set to Private. This mean you can upload a vlog and only enable certain people to actually watch it. You can’t have direct one-on-one conversations but you can send messages which is just as good
Facebook is one of the most popular Social Networking sites in the whole world. It also comes with handy features. Yes is has the ability to message friends but it also shows you who is online. They have created the chat feature which means you don’t have wait for ages just to get a reply from someone. Now you can get an instant reply from your friends. There response happens at an instant and if you are wondering if they are responding, it has a little icon at the bottom of the chat which shows whether your friend is typing or not. As you can see on the image, there is a video camera in the top right corner. This is another form of chatting. It enables video chat which is very popular these days.
Not everything these days is still high tech. People everywhere are still using phones to ring other friends. This is the simplest way to contact someone, it is extremely easy and it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, you can still make a call. The only thing that is required is a signal. If you have no phone signal then you can’t contact anyone.
Teamspeak is what a lot of gamers use to talk to each other whilst playing video games. Unlike Skype, it allows you to talk to more than one person. The positive thing is that it is completely FREE. Teamspeak is a program that is completely based on verbally talking to your friends. All you have to do is connect to each player and then start. This is extremely fun but it is slightly difficult to set up as it doesn’t have direct instructions.
Teamviewer is just like Teamspeak but it involves audio and video. Teamviewer is a program that allows other people to view what you are doing on your screen. So if you wanted to host a tutorial and have some people watch it, then this is the software to use. Just like Teamspeak, Teamviewer is also a FREE download.
